OKUSHALIST
WIEHAN DE JAGER
Wiehan de Jager is a South African artist, printmaker, visual-communication designer, illustrator, and lecturer based in Riebeek Kasteel in the Western Cape. In his work, Wiehan explores the processes of mark-making through the juxtaposition of various media such as collage, printmaking, drawing and painting techniques. The surface and material are mostly that of paper, its versatility being tested, and the possibilities explored when working with a combination of various types of paper, mediums and techniques. Wiehan works intuitively and exploratively, not being too precious about the plan, but to let the work set the tone, coming into its own. Various themes are explored, mainly reflecting on interpretations of movement, stillness and change. Being inspired by arid and tactile natural landscapes such as the Kgalagadi, the Richtersveld and the Cederberg, the interpretations become textural, layered, structured, emotive, and abstract, as if slowed down or paused in its volitant moment. With the work specifically created for Okushal, Wiehan reflected on the instance of renewal, the excitability that brings forth a moment of anticipation. An unpredictability that could rapidly and capriciously generate transformation. Wiehan oozes creative renewalism.
